Positive Minds;

We are a CAMHS and Premier League Charity Fund funded project ran by the Watford CSE Trust, that aims to support individuals with their mental health and wellbeing.

Our programme began in Spring 2018 supporting schools, individuals and grass root football coaches across Watford & Hemel Hempstead, supporting over 11,790 people. We have recently received further funding to continue our programmes and expand to support schools across the whole of Hertfordshire.

We know that increasing numbers of young people in employment, at sports clubs, colleges and schools are needing support with their mental health and wellbeing. This project aims to equip young people (alongside teachers, parents and sports coaches) with the skills and knowledge needed to develop healthy and lasting coping strategies.

Mental Health has been identified as a challenge affecting both boys and girls across Hertfordshire, and therefore this programme provides sessions for both groups, via both the school sessions and the physical activity sessions.

What is mental health?

“Mental health refers to a person’s condition in regard to their psychological, social and emotional wellbeing. Mental health affects how we think, feel and behave. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to other people and make choices."

At least one in four Hertfordshire residents will experience mental health problems at some point in their lives - often not diagnosed or requiring specialist services. Around half of people with lifetime mental illness experience their first symptoms by the age of fourteen. Promoting good mental health and intervening early we can help prevent mental illness from developing and support the mitigation of its effects when it does. Physical and mental health are closely linked – people with severe and prolonged mental illness are at risk of dying up to 20 years earlier than other people, this is one of the greatest health inequalities in England.
